Flying and transporting night vision.

Transport is where storage discipline gets tested by other people: baggage handlers, loadmasters and customs. The device cannot advocate for itself in the hold, so the preparation has to.

First question: may it travel at all?

Before packing anything, confirm the device is allowed to make the journey. Night vision equipment is export-controlled in most jurisdictions, including Australia, and carrying a device across a border without the right approvals is a legal problem, not a packing problem. For unit equipment, that authority comes through your chain of command; for anything international, check the controls that apply before booking. Our compliance page outlines how DEVCELL approaches this space.

Cabin beats hold, when permitted

Where regulations and the operator allow, a night vision device travels best in the cabin with you: no thrown bags, no unpressurised temperature extremes, no separation from its owner. Airline rules on lithium batteries generally require spares in carry-on luggage regardless, so plan batteries into the cabin from the start. If the device must fly checked, assume rough handling and pack for it.

Pack for impact, not for tidiness

Checked baggage is dropped, stacked and compressed. Foam cut-outs that have aged soft, or padding that lets the device migrate, turn every transfer into a gamble. The standard that works: the device immobilised in an exact-fit hard case, caps on, batteries out, and that case then padded inside the outer bag away from the shell. The NODBOX was designed around exactly this job for the AN/PVS-31A and 31C, and why loose fit fails is covered in why night-vision cases fail.

Vehicles are the everyday risk

Most transport damage never sees an airport. Dashboards and rear shelves cook devices in the sun; loose stowage lets hard braking do the rest. In vehicles the rules are the same as anywhere: cased, restrained, out of direct sun, and never left in a hot cabin longer than necessary.

The arrival drill

Damage found at destination is manageable; damage found at 0200 on task is not. On arrival: open the case, inspect the housing and optics, run a function check, and let a cold-soaked device acclimatise before use in humid air. Two minutes of drill turns transport from a question mark into a known quantity.

Quick checklist

  • Export-control and command authority confirmed before travel
  • Cabin carriage preferred; spare lithium batteries in carry-on
  • Device immobilised in an exact-fit hard case, caps on, batteries out
  • Case padded within the outer bag, away from the shell
  • Vehicles: cased, restrained, out of the sun
  • Inspection and function check on arrival
