What moisture actually does
Internal fogging is the visible symptom, but the slower damage matters more. Moisture corrodes battery contacts and connector pins. In tropical climates, sustained humidity grows fungus on lens coatings, and fungus etches glass in a way no cleaning recovers. None of this needs immersion; ordinary humid air, given time and temperature swings, is enough.
Where the water comes from
Condensation is the usual culprit. Take a cold device into warm, humid air and water forms on every surface, inside and out. The same happens in reverse inside a sealed case that was closed in a warm tent and cooled overnight. Wet gear stowed in the same bag, breath during close work, and rain that never got wiped off all add their share. The device does not have to get rained on to end up wet.
Dry before you stow, always
A sealed case works in both directions: it keeps moisture out and it traps moisture in. Sealing a damp device is how optics fog from the inside. Wipe the device down, let it reach room temperature and dry properly, then close it up. If it came in cold, let it warm gradually in its case before opening it into humid air; that keeps condensation on the outside of the case rather than on the lenses.
Desiccant that actually works
Silica gel is cheap insurance, used correctly. Size the sachet to the space it serves, pair it with an indicator card so its state is visible at a glance, and rotate it on a schedule rather than when someone remembers. Saturated desiccant is dead weight. Most sachets regenerate in a low oven, so a rotation habit costs nothing. Desiccant maintains a dry space; it does not rescue a wet device.
Small volumes are easy volumes
The less air a case holds, the less moisture there is to manage and the further one sachet goes. That is a quiet advantage of an exact-fit case like the NODBOX: the internal volume around an AN/PVS-31A or 31C is minimal, so a dry close stays dry. The wider storage routine is in our storage guide.

- Device wiped down and fully dry before the case closes
- Cold devices warmed gradually before opening into humid air
