Start with the device, not the case
The first question is not "which case" but "which device". A case built around the exact geometry of an AN/PVS-31 protects it differently to a universal box with foam cut to roughly the same shape. Device-specific cases control every contact point; universal cases approximate them. If a moulded case exists for your platform, that is where the search should start.
Fit: void space is the enemy
Inside a case, movement is damage on layaway. Every millimetre of void space lets the device accelerate before it stops against something. A correct case holds the device so it cannot rattle, with the load spread across the housing rather than concentrated on lenses or tube ends. Shake the closed case: if you can hear or feel the device, it is not protecting it.
Sealing: dust and water find everything
Ingress ratings do the talking here. A case rated IP55 or better keeps out dust and jetting water: the environments a device actually meets on vehicles, ramps and ranges. Environmental resilience matters too: heat, humidity, salt fog and fungus are what kill optics slowly in the tropics and on littoral tasks. Look for testing against MIL-STD-810H environmental methods rather than marketing words like "rugged".
Weight and bulk: the case you leave behind protects nothing
This is the most underrated specification. Kilogram-class universal hard cases offer excellent protection and rarely leave the vehicle, because nobody wants to carry them. A case light and compact enough to live with the device (a pack lid, an admin pouch, a helmet bag) gets used every time. Protection that stays in the arms room is theoretical.
Hard case or soft pouch?
- Soft pouches are light, cheap and quiet. They stop scratches and light knocks. They do nothing against crush, and little against a real impact or immersion.
- Universal hard cases stop everything, at the cost of weight and bulk; see above.
- Moulded device-specific hard cases aim at the middle: crush and impact protection with pouch-class weight, because the case only carries the material it needs.
The details that matter at 0200
Positive, gloved-hand closure. One-hand opening. No sharp corners against the body. A shape that packs predictably. These sound minor in a procurement document and decisive in the field.
