How fleets actually degrade
Fleet damage is rarely dramatic. It is the bench pile after an exercise, devices swapped between bags with no case, the one uncapped unit near the window, and moisture nobody owned because everybody assumed someone else did. Each is minor; across forty devices and two years they compound into tubes that read tired and optics that read foggy at exactly the wrong audit.
Serialised storage, one case per device
The foundation is one exact-fit case per device, labelled with the device serial, so a device is either issued or in its case with no third state. The case travels with the device on issue and returns with it. That single rule kills the bench pile, makes sign-in and sign-out unambiguous, and means every device is protected in transit by default rather than by exception. The arms-room environment
The room does half the work: stable temperature, dry air, and dark racking away from direct light. Add a desiccant program with indicator cards at rack level, rotated on a posted schedule. Racking should hold cases secure and visible, so a missing device is obvious at a glance rather than at stocktake.
Records that catch decline early
Tubes fade quietly, so fleets need baselines. Record blemish and function state per serial at induction, then recheck on a rotation: a portion of the fleet each month rather than everything annually. Batteries stay out of stored devices and in managed stock. A device that took a hard knock gets a function check logged before it returns to the rack. The habits are the same as for individual tube care, applied with a roster.
Issue-ready as the standard
The test of fleet storage is simple: any device, taken from the rack at any hour, should be dry, capped, blemish-known, function-checked within its rotation, and in a case ready to travel. When that is true, night vision stops being a readiness question and becomes an inventory line that simply works.
